
Registration for Hunter Education Classes are now being booked for 2008. Classes will be held at (3) three different locations this year, location #1 is at the Oak Tree Gun Club www.oaktreegunclub.com, #2 will be held at The Boys & Girls Club of Moorpark and #3 Palmdale Fin & Feather Club. The Hunter Education Class is the required course by California Department Fish & Game as a prerequisite before obtaining your first hunting license. Some common question that are frequently asked:
What is the Minimum Age to take Hunter Education Class? There isn't a minimum age, but the study material is at a 5th grade level or suggested minimum age 10 years.
What if I have a learning disability? If you have disability such as, ADD, ADHD, Dislexia, Deaf, even Blind we can try to accommodate with pre-arrangements.
What if I don't read or speak English very well? At this time we do not have any foreign speaking instructors. We will allow Spanish speaking interpreters for Spanish students, as we do have a limited supply of Spanish books & test. If you need a class in your language, check with the State Fish & Game Office located in Sacramento @ (916) 653-4094.
Can I just show up for the class? No. Because this is a (1) one day class, you are required to have the study material ahead of time to study and finish the review questions in the book. Also, since we have a class minimum attendance of (10) ten students we must know ahead of time if we have enough students to hold a class.
How much is the class & how do I pay? The class costs range from $ 32.00 to $ 35.00 (depending on location) per student, Range & Lunch are "additional - optional" expense. A $ 20.00 deposit is required with your application to reserve your seat and balance due on class day. Mail registration forms to: SCVQU Hunter Education Class, P.O. Box 803189, Santa Clarita, Ca 91380-3189. We also accept Visa & Mastercard for class registration and you may FAX (661) 297-0876 your registration if paying by credit card. Any return checks will be charge a $ 25.00 return fee and HE Certificates will held until payment is settled.
Do the Instructors, Quail Unlimited, Oak Tree Gun Club, High Desert Hunt Club, The Boys & Girls Club of Moorpark or The Palmdale Fin & Feather Club make money from these classes? No. By State Fish & Game regulations & International Hunter Education Association rules state this is a Not For Profit program. The class fee you are charged is to cover Class expenses, such as: Advertisement, Classroom Rental, Mailing Student Materials and Credit Card Processing Fees..
How long is the class? The class is (1) one full day (eight hours), plus (2) hours credit when home study is finished.
When does the class start & finished? Check in time is 7:30am and ends when testing portion is finished.
Can I use Hunter Education Certificate to purchase my first Handgun? No, you must take a different test called the " Calif. Handgun Safety Test". You can take this test anytime at The Oaktree Gun Club Handgun Range or any other gun store. Cost is $ 25.00 per student.
Is my Hunter Education Certificate good in other States? Yes, your Hunter Education Certificate in recognized in all states that require it.
What is the Hunter Education Test like? The written test that is given at the end of the day consist of 100 questions. Out of the 100 questions, 50% is True/False & 50% Multiple Choice.
Is the test "Open Book"? No. What would be the point of taking the class if you didn't learn anything.
What is a Passing score? To pass the test, the minimum score is 80%. That's 80 questions right, out 100!
What happens if I don't pass the written portion of the class? If you fail to score a minimum 80% on the test, you can come back the following month to re-test.
Do I have to pay again and stay all day in the class? No, But you must re-register for the next class and show up at 2:30pm and re-take the test with the other students.
* Do I get the opportunity to shoot on the RANGE? Some of our locations offer the opportunity to shoot on the RANGE. We encourage you take this "optional" opportunity from our Certified NRA Instructors to show you Safe "Hands-On" Gun Handling & Firing.
Is the "Range" portion of the class mandatory? No, Some of the other Hunter Education Classes don't have the option to offer "Range" as part of their class, the Oaktree Gun Club & Palmdale Fin & Feather Club does. At this time DFG makes "Range" as voluntary element to Hunter Education Class, take advantage of it.
What happens if I don't own or never have shot a shotgun before? Shotgun Rentals is only a couple bucks and I.D. is required. If you've never shot or not sure how to operate your shotgun, that's why you are taking this class!
I do own a shotgun, should I bring it? Yes. If you own a 12 or 20 gauge shotgun and it's in good working order, bring it! If it is something else like a 16, 28 or 410, you can bring them too, but you'll have to supply your own ammunition. Don't forget your Ear & Eye protection !
Why don't you offer classes year-around? Because all of our Instructor's are Volunteers, there is only so much time they can donate. Currently we have (6) six Volunteer Instructors that teach (25) ten classes a year.

** Is Lunch available at this location? Some of our location offer Lunch as a "optional" part of their class. Students are encouraged to take advantage of the convenience, since many offsite restaurants are a distance away and returning students many be late for class.
